The Oxford Chair was handmade for professors at St Catherine's College, Oxford University and designed by Arne Jacobsen. A symbol of prestige and status; the medium backrest and smooth, curved shape of the veneer were crafted to invoke a sense of space and privacy. The design evolved over time into today's Oxford Classic. In addition to the original professor's chair; Jacobsen designed a low-back variant with sleek, angled armrests for use in Oxford meeting rooms. The chair's arms provided an elegant visual counterpoint to the bold curvature of the shell and have evolved through multiple relaunches of the chair over the years; becoming the elegant metal versions used today that echo the elegant profile of the plywood originals. |
